Father Robert Callahan was ordained at St. Mary’s Seminary on May 25, 1957. Following accusations of his involvement in an extramarital affair with a neighbor’s wife in 1978, he remained on an indefinite leave of absence.
In 1988, a man reported Callahan anally sodomized him and encouraged him to drink excessively between the ages of eleven and eighteen. The abuse occurred in numerous locations, including the rectories of St. Rita and Christ the King, Callahan’s car, Callahan’s houseboat, and the survivor’s own home and car. The survivor expressed frustration with the Church’s handling of the situation and intended to disclose the abuse publicly. Despite evidence suggesting prior knowledge of Callahan’s inappropriate behavior, the Archdiocese claimed no such awareness. In 2017, it was revealed that the allegations against Callahan were not reported as required by canon law, leading to his subsequent laicization.
