Leander L. James IV | Founding Shareholder

Leander James is a founding shareholder of the firm. He believes legal empowerment transforms lives, and he has committed his career to empowering his clients. His civil litigation and trial practice are focused on obtaining large settlements and verdicts. He helps sexual abuse survivors and the catastrophically injured reclaim their lives. He brings justice to pensioners, employees, and business and property owners in serious disputes.

Mr. James was a principal architect of the $166 million Northwest Jesuit sexual abuse settlement that included non-monetary terms for protection of children. His current cases include Catholic abuse cases in New York, Hawaii, Minnesota and other states. He represents hundreds of British Petroleum employees to reclaim their pension benefits. He testifies before legislatures, and he has assisted in drafting key legislation, including New York State’s Child Victims Act. His appellate cases have established precedent. His practice is national in scope.

Mr. James is a past president of the Idaho Trial Lawyers Association and past president of the Idaho Trial Lawyers Association Foundation, Inc. He is an appointed Chair on the Idaho State Bar Professional Conduct Board. In 2011 the Bar awarded Mr. James its Service Award for his public service.

Mr. James graduated from the University of Santa Clara in 1983 with a B.A. in English, emphasis in writing. Thereafter he gained a wide variety of life experiences as a school teacher in France, editor, carpenter and commercial fisherman in Alaska. Mr. James graduated from the University of Idaho College of Law in 1993. He is admitted to practice law before state and federal bars, including New York State, Washington State, Minnesota and the Supreme Court of the United States of America (see below for list of bar admissions). Additionally, Mr. James obtains pro hac vice admission as needed to represent clients anywhere in the United States.

Craig K. Vernon | Founding Shareholder

Craig Vernon is a Shareholder at James, Vernon & Weeks, P.A., where he takes an active role in managing the Firm.

Mr. Vernon has extensive experience in civil litigation, obtaining high-end settlements and verdicts ranging from defective products, dangerous drugs, medical malpractice, and sex abuse cases. Mr. Vernon was born in Alexandria, Virginia, attended elementary and high school in Idaho. After completing his undergraduate degree in 1993 with a Bachelors Degree in Economics, Mr. Vernon attended the University of Idaho Law School where he graduated in 1996. During law school, Mr. Vernon was a Langroise Scholarship recipient and selected as a National Moot Court Competitor.

Mr. Vernon is currently focusing his practice on helping survivors of childhood sexual abuse achieve justice for past wrongs and in so doing helping to protect children in the future. Mr. Vernon has proudly represented many hundreds of sexual abuse survivors in Idaho, Montana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Arizona, Utah, Washington, Hawaii, and on the Navajo Nation. These cases have mostly involved claims against powerful religious and other organizations that failed to protect children from sexual abuse by persons in power over them.

Susan P. Weeks | Founding Shareholder

Susan Weeks graduated from the University of Idaho in 1986 with a Bachelors in Business Finance Cum Laude. She graduated from the University of Idaho Law School in 1990 Cum Laude. Ms. Weeks has extensive experience in business law, corporate law, municipal law, real estate law and commercial and civil litigation. Ms. Weeks serves as corporate counsel for numerous businesses in their general legal matters and municipal counsel for several governmental bodies. She also has an extensive background in all facets of civil litigation, including contract disputes, commercial claims, landlord/tenant matters and real estate issues. Stephen J. Nemec | Senior Partner

Mr. Nemec is an active member of the Washington State Bar Association and the Idaho State Bar Association whose practice focuses on personal injury.  He is also a registered patent attorney admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.  He is certified by the Idaho Trial Lawyers Association as a workers’ compensation specialist and serves on the board of the Idaho State Bar Workers’ Compensation Section.  Mr. Nemec was selected to the 2015 Mountain States Rising Stars list published nationwide in Super Lawyers Magazines.

Melanie E. Baillie | Partner

Melanie Baillie hails from Juneau, Alaska. She attended Gonzaga University law school, where she graduated cum laude in May, 2005. Ms. Baillie had her own general practice until 2012 when she joined the firm of James, Vernon and Weeks, P.A.

Ms. Baillie’s practice focuses primarily on Plaintiff’s personal injury and all aspects of family law. Ms. Baillie has been involved in complex civil litigation, including representing survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Wes S. Larsen | Partner

Wes Larsen joined the James, Vernon & Weeks team in early 2011. He attended graduate school and law school at Gonzaga University, where he worked for Gonzaga’s general practice law clinic, completed an externship for Spokane County Superior Court, and served as an associate editor of the Gonzaga Law Review. Before law school, Wes graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, Spanish minor. He also did extensive volunteer work in Mexico. He is actively involved in his local community and has served as vice president of a nonprofit board. He lives with his wife and children in Spokane, Washington.

Daniel M. Keyes | Partner

Daniel Keyes joined the James, Vernon & Weeks team in early 2014. He attended law school at University of Idaho, where he participated in the McNichols Moot Court Competition, Duberstein Moot Court Competition, and was the president of the Intellectual Property Law Society. Before law school, Daniel graduated with distinction from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy, with Anthropology minor. He also did extensive volunteer work in the Philippines and is fluent in several Filipino languages. Daniel lives with his wife and children in Post Falls.

Monica M. Flood Brennan | Of Counsel

Monica Flood Brennan is an experienced attorney licensed to practice law in Idaho and Washington. She’s been a practicing attorney and litigating cases in Idaho since 1995 and in Washington since 2010.

Monica has been litigating Criminal Defense cases involving felony and misdemeanor charges, including DUI and domestic batteries. She also specializes in family law, custody, divorce, adoption and guardianship; as well as personal injury cases, including car crashes and slip and fall. Brady L. Espeland | Associate

Brady Espeland joined the James, Vernon & Weeks team in 2018. He survived going to graduate school and law school at the same time at the University of Idaho, where he also served as the Director of Web Development for the Idaho Law Review, and occasionally stepped in to teach legal writing and cybersecurity as a teaching assistant. Prior to his decision to become an attorney, Brady dabbled in far too many subjects and eventually graduated from the University of Idaho with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Information Systems. His passions lie in law and technology, but outside the office he is an avid audiophile, casual gamer, and a terrible skier.
