Father John Carney was ordained on May 25, 1963. In 1991, a survivor disclosed that when she was ten years old, in approximately 1970-1971, Carney fondled and kissed her on numerous occasions. Carney admitted to kissing the girl but denied other inappropriate behavior. In March of 1995, the victim’s mother said that she observed Carney put his hands up her daughter’s shirt and engage in inappropriate touching. When confronted, he admitted that he “hugged and kissed” the ten-year-old girl in a “romantic fashion.”
According to a 2017 letter from an attorney, Carney physically abused a 6th-grade boy who was a student at Archbishop Keough during the 1960s, having beat the student’s legs and feet with a rubber hose, punched the student in the stomach, and placed his hands around the student’s throat. He is reported to have watched other acts of sexual abuse by Father Maskell (included in this list).
