In 1985, Deacon John Justice was accused of sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl at St. Louis Church, later admitting to the abuse. Archbishop Keeler removed Justice’s deacon faculties in December 1989. In 1995, Justice requested reinstatement, admitting to the abuse and seeking forgiveness. The family involved did not want criminal charges or civil action and wanted no further contact from the Archdiocese. The detective considered the case “exceptionally cleared,” meaning it was closed with the acknowledgment that the abuse had occurred. Despite Justice’s multiple requests, the Archdiocese rejected reinstatement. Justice died on May 27, 2015.
