Father Albert Julian was ordained on May 26, 1958. In 1968, Cardinal Shehan received a letter detailing Julian’s sexual abuse of a young girl, including rape. Although there is no record of immediate action by the Archdiocese, a 1970 letter from Cardinal Shehan to Vatican authorities described the allegation and Julian’s admission of sexual attraction to young people. Julian received psychiatric treatment, was removed from active parish work, and later requested to be laicized to marry. The incident survivor came forward in 2002 but declined to press charges. There is no record of her being informed of the initial reporting or that Julian admitted to the abuse. Julian died in June 2006.
