Father Raymond Melville was ordained in 1985. In March 1990, a Baltimore man wrote a letter to the Diocese of Portland, Maine, stating that Melville had emotionally, sexually, and physically abused him as a teenager between 1980 and 1985. Melville was a seminarian at St. Mary’s Seminary and volunteered at Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church and The Catholic Community Middle School at the time. The survivor remained silent out of fear but finally came forward to protect others from being victimized. Melville admitted to the allegations and was sent for counseling in Minneapolis.
In July 2001, a second survivor reported that Melville sexually abused him in 1985 when he was a student at St. Mary’s School and an altar boy at St. Mary’s parish in Augusta, Maine. Melville admitted the abuse and a settlement was reached. Since then, two more survivors have come forward detailing Melville’s abuse, including oral rape. Melville died on March 1, 2020.
