Father Maurice Blackwell was ordained on May 18, 1974. He has several credible accusations of sexual abuse against him. In August 1993, the Archdiocese investigated a report that Blackwell had sexually abused a choirboy at St. Edward’s Church over three years, finding the allegations consistent and credible. Since this revelation, several survivors have come forward regarding Blackwell’s various forms of abuse during his tenure at St. Bernadine Church, St. Gregory the Great, and St. Edward’s School.
Blackwell is said to have given some victims alcohol and told them that if anyone was notified of the abuse, “no one would believe them, and they would be damned to hell.” Credible allegations date back to 1970 when Blackwell was a seminarian at St. Mary’s. Despite concern among parish members and an objection by the Independent Review Board, Blackwell was reinstated following a leave of absence for therapy in 1993 related to abuse allegations. He was placed on another leave of absence from 1998 until his removal in 2004.
