Father Mark Haight was ordained on May 8, 1976. In 1980, a fellow pastor reported “uneasy feelings” about Haight’s interactions with children. He took a leave of absence, though still instructed children. He eventually attended counseling at the House of Affirmation for Treatment in California in 1985. In 1989, a survivor reported to the Diocese of Albany that Father Haight sexually abused him as a pastor at St. Joseph’s Church in Scotia, New York. He was allowed to return to a “limited form of ministry” one year later, in 1990. In 1996, following another report of child sex abuse, Haight was removed from the ministry. In 2002, another survivor reported that Haight sexually abused him when he was fourteen on a camping trip while Haight was a seminarian at St. Mary’s Seminary. Civil suits regarding Haight’s conduct outside of Maryland were settled for large sums.
