Toohey, Jerome “Jeff” (Fr.)

Father Jerome Toohey was ordained on May 21, 1977. In 1990 two complaints were made by students at Calvert Hall, one student complained that Toohey used graphic language, and another student complained that Toohey touched them inappropriately during counseling. In 1993, a survivor reported that Toohey sexually abused him from 1985-1989. The survivor’s parents sent him to Toohey for being gay, and Toohey met with the survivor on a weekly basis. Toohey had the survivor tell Toohey about his sexual acts in detail while Toohey stroked his thighs. The abuse escalated to fondling. The survivor later saw Toohey at a gay bar with a former student from Calvert Hall.

In 2004, another man reported that Toohey sexually abused him at Calvert Hall and in Toohey’s private residence from 1987-1990. The abuse included kissing, fondling, and oral rape. Toohey was convicted and served 10 months in jail. Several other survivors have come forward since to report Toohey’s abuse.
