In 2002, a man reported that John Shine physically and sexually abused his father at St. Mary’s Industrial School in the late 1940s. Shine would reportedly take a different boy from “Dorm 4” into his room every night. When the survivor was selected, Shine sexually abused him. He was beaten with a belt when he tried to push Shine away. When his parents reported the abuse to the Archdiocese, nothing was done, so they removed him from the school. The survivor noted that Shine was not the only abuser in the school at the time. John Shine died on March 21, 1974.
