From 1968 to 1978, Fr. Thomas Bauernfeind worked in the Chancery of the Archdiocese and held the position of Chancellor from 1975 to 1978, where he oversaw administrative functions and advised the archbishop. In February 1987, a survivor reported that Bauernfeind had sexually assaulted her when she was 16 while working at St. Anthony Rectory. He later admitted abusing her but denied abusing any other victims. The Archdiocese did not conduct any further investigations.
A second survivor, a personal secretary to Bauernfiend, reported multiple instances of sexual abuse by him during his time at the Catholic Center in 1974, including attempted rape. Furthermore, he pressured her into officiating her wedding and threatened that no one would believe her if she reported any abuse. The survivor reported abuse on two occasions prior to 2002. On her third report, and after the list of credible abusers was released, the Archdiocese made the mandated reports. Bauernfiend died on January 1, 2003.
