Velez-Lopez, Jorge Antonio (Tertiary Capuchin Fr.)

Father Jorge Antonio Velez-Lopez was ordained July 8, 1989. In 2003, an anonymous complaint reported that Velez kissed and purchased sleepwear for a teenage girl. In 2009, a man reported that he found Velez naked in bed with a teenage girl in the man’s home. Velez threatened the man’s family in Colombia if the man reported Velez. While in the U.S., Velez carried on a sexual relationship with a teenage girl who became pregnant; Velez signed the child’s birth certificate. The incident revealed the sexual abuse Velez committed on the teenager and mother of his child. Velez’s superiors knew of his abuse and did not report him. Velez was convicted of sex abuse of a minor in 2020 and sentenced to twenty-five years with all but nine years suspended.
