Father John Joseph Mike, Jr. was ordained on May 10, 1975. At least seven survivors, all teenage boys at the time of the abuse, reported Mike abused them between 1975 and 1987. Reports indicate that Mike would commit tortuous physical acts on the boys to “test them,” leading to scars, bruises, wounds, and significant emotional trauma. Mike admitted to several incidences of abuse and claimed that he had “sexually stimulating fantasies about such behavior.” In September 1987, he plead guilty to one count of physical child abuse and received a fully suspended five-year sentence and five years’ probation.
In subsequent years, additional reports of abuse by Mike emerged. Survivors came forward, reporting incidents of improper touching, physical abuse, and sexual abuse between 1980 and 1987. Some incidents were reported to the police, while others were known to individuals within the Archdiocese but were not formally reported.
