Father Alfred Dean was ordained on May 14th, 1989. In July 2000, a parishioner of St. Francis Xavier warned Cardinal Keeler that Dean should not be appointed Pastor of St. Francis Xavier and that members of the parish were aware that Dean was a “child molester” and had a “history of alcoholism.” In April of 2002, there was a meeting between the Archdiocese and Dean regarding his relationship with two teenage boys who appeared to be living with him in the rectory, but he denied any misconduct allegations. In July 2002, a survivor reported that Dean had kissed him on the lips at St. Francis Xavier parish on several instances from April to July. In August 2002, a parishioner of St. Francis reported that Dean would “ride around Mount Vernon and pick up little boys” every Monday night. He was removed from the ministry over concerns of sexual abuse in 2002.
