Creditor Committee Reaches Out to Abuse Survivors

The Official Creditor Committee in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis bankruptcy has made an unprecedented appeal for abuse survivors to anonymously file claims .  The debtor in bankruptcy, in this case the Archdiocese, is legally charged with giving such notice to all survivors of abuse.  However, the Creditor Committee didn’t wait around for the Archdiocese to fulfill that duty.  The Committee members themselves issued their personal appeals for justice.

Children are Suffering Too, Archbishop

Newly appointed interim head of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minnesota, Archbishop Bernard Hebda, said yesterday that he will devote most of his time to the archdiocese, because “The archdiocese has been suffering something difficult and shocking, and it would make sense to give [it] the bulk of time and energy at this point.”  What was unfortunately missing from the Archbishop’s comments is recognition that children have been suffering  difficult and shocking things as a result of the Archdiocese’s wrongful conduct.

Hebda’s comments were made in an interview with The Catholic Spirit, a Catholic newspaper, but he did not address mainstream media.

Resources Available to Organizations For Protection of Children

In the wake of the recent criminal charges against the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis for mishandling of child sex abuse reports, the Diocese of Helena Bankruptcy, recent lawsuits against other religious groups and a multi-million dollar punitive damage verdict against the Boy Scouts of America, it is important to remember there are readily accessible resources for these and other organizations to prevent child abuse.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention publication “Preventing Child Sexual Abuse Within Youth-serving Organizations” is a rich resource for policies, procedures and strategies to prevent abuse.

Courageous Cowboy Client Speaks Out About Abuse

The courage of Richard Geary is self-evident.  In his recent column in the Missoulian, Richard speaks out about priest abuse he endured as a naive country boy, its effects on his life, his journey through the Helena Bankruptcy case, and his empathy for survivors still living in silence and shame, “The ones I pity are those who still can’t admit to anyone what happened to them. God help them in their silence and undeserved shame.”

Richard’s case was about more than the limited resources the Helena Diocese had to pay claims.  It was about breaking the silence and speaking out for justice, reform and protection of children.   Because of Richard and hundreds of other survivors like him, the Diocese has acknowledged its wrongful conduct, the legitimacy of survivor claims, and has instituted policies and procedures for the protection of children in the future.  As one client told me, “If my coming forward and bringing this case with you saves one child from the harm I went through, it will have all been worth it.”  To Richard and all our Helena clients:  you have and will save children from harm; you have and will alter the bad behavior of  an institution; you have exposed the truth and changed the course of Montana history.

Tevlin: Nienstedt not the only one culpable in church sex scandal

From the Sartribune:  Archbishops Harry Flynn and John Nienstedt couldn’t be further apart in beliefs and style, but now they are inexorably linked in the sex scandals and criminal charges that have rocked the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.
